N-331 road closure for railway infrastructure works

Overview

Infrastructure works by Adif on an overpass above the Algeciras-Zaragoza railway line have necessitated the closure of the N-331 national road between Montilla and Aguilar de la Frontera. The project, which involves replacing beams to increase vertical clearance, was scheduled to begin in late August 2026 and is projected to continue until March 2027.

Following the implementation of the closure on September 7, concerns were raised regarding the impact on emergency services. Local health advocacy groups noted that alternative routes could increase travel times from Aguilar de la Frontera to the Hospital de Montilla from approximately 15 minutes to 45 minutes.

In response, authorities from the central government, the Junta de Andalucía, and local city councils reached a consensus to establish a permanent passage for emergency vehicles to mitigate these delays.
