Overview

On 22 July 2026 insurgents assaulted a volunteer ranger checkpoint in Thailand’s Narathiwat province, killing five members of the 45th Ranger Force and wounding civilians. Thai authorities declared martial law in the province, recovered spent casings and seized weapons, and secured an arrest warrant for suspect Azizun while summoning another suspect, Mahamasri, for questioning.

In the days that followed, Malaysian police in Kelantan said they had found no evidence that the attackers had crossed the Malaysia‑Thailand border. Kelantan officials emphasized ongoing border monitoring, tighter controls, and expressed support for Thailand’s proposal to construct a 90‑kilometre security fence along the frontier to curb cross‑border crime and drug trafficking.
