Nariño regional development and diplomacy

Overview

Local leaders and experts in Pasto have initiated discussions regarding the future economic transformation of the Nariño department. These talks focused on moving past historical missed opportunities, such as the proposed ‘Gran Refinería de Occidente’ and lost railway connections, to prioritize modern growth and industrial potential.

Building on these themes, the region is scheduled to host forums focused on economic competitiveness and international relations. The ‘Nariño Competitivo 2026’ event aims to foster innovation and business development through various institutional partnerships. Concurrently, a forum on subnational and emerging diplomacies will explore how the territory can leverage its border status to build strategic international connections and access cooperation opportunities.
