NASCAR Brickyard 400 caution period review

After the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, NASCAR officials responded to fan criticism over lengthy yellow‑flag periods that consumed 27 of the 160 laps. On July 28, Vice President of Racing Communications Mike Forde said the organization was examining ways to shorten cautions, including moving the “Choose” marker to reduce laps run under yellow, especially near stage ends.

Three days later, NASCAR reiterated its review, noting a 20‑minute caution stretch caused by crashes involving Kyle Larson and Daniel Dye. While exploring methods to increase green‑flag racing time, officials confirmed that stage‑break cautions would remain unchanged and there were no plans to eliminate them. The sanctioning body emphasized that it is tracking the time between yellow and green flags to improve the racing experience and address fan frustration.
