National Teachers Awards ceremony in India
Overview
On September 5, 2026, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Teachers' Awards at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi to mark Teachers’ Day. Organized by the Ministry of Education’s Department of School Education and Literacy, the ceremony honored 48 school educators—comprising 26 men and 22 women—representing 27 states, seven Union Territories, and six central government organizations. These recipients were selected through a three-stage process involving district, state, and national levels.
During the event, President Murmu addressed the nation, emphasizing that educators must guide students without generating “fear or anxiety” and should treat students “equally and fairly.” She highlighted the role of teachers in reducing school dropout rates and fostering equality of opportunity, specifically noting their responsibility to support first-generation learners, students with special needs, and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. She also advised teachers to embrace emerging technologies like artificial intelligence while ensuring technology does not replace the human element of teaching.
Among the awardees were four Muslim educators: Mohammad Zafar Alam from Odisha, Dr. Iftikhar Khan from Uttar Pradesh, Mohammad Ayaz Raina from Jammu & Kashmir, and Mohammad Mustafa Kamal from Ladakh. Mohammad Zafar Alam, Principal of Eklavya Model Residential School in Mayurbhanj, was recognized for providing quality education to tribal children in remote areas.
Various state-level honors were also conducted, including recognitions in Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya.
