Nationalist banner incident at FIBA Europe Cup match

Overview

During a FIBA Europe Cup match between AE Iraklis and MZT Skopje, political tensions arose when MZT Skopje fans displayed a nationalist banner. The banner featured a map of a ‘United Macedonia’ that included the Greek territories of Thessaloniki and Chalkidiki, accompanied by the message: ‘We will defend your sacred name throughout the world.’

AE Iraklis management responded by notifying the game commissioner and the Greek Embassy in Skopje, while announcing plans to file a formal complaint with FIBA. Despite the incident, Iraklis secured a 64-59 away victory in the opening match.
