Natural disasters in Nepal

Nepal has experienced a series of seismic events following devastating flash floods and landslides triggered by an avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border in late August.

On September 6, a 3.8 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 20 kilometers. This followed a previous 3.2 magnitude tremor on August 27. At that time, the death toll from recent flash floods reached 1,344, with search operations ongoing in northern and central Nepal. An 11-member technical team from India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was deployed to assist local rescue efforts.

By September 8, a larger 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Mustang district, with its epicenter in Lo Manthang. Tremors were felt in the Kathmandu Valley and the districts of Manang, Dolpa, and Myagdi. While no immediate earthquake damage was reported, the event disrupted mobile and broadband networks and caused widespread panic. The death toll from the preceding flooding rose to at least 1,357, with over 5,000 people still reported missing. The ongoing seismic activity has threatened to complicate relief and recovery efforts for communities displaced by the floods.
