Overview

Heavy monsoon rains caused two extreme flooding episodes in Gujarat. The first struck South Gujarat in early July 2024, prompting red alerts and evacuations in Navsari, Valsad, Surat, Tapi and Dang, with cash assistance and ration kits provided. The second wave hit in late July 2026, delivering record rainfall (over 1,200 mm in Umbergaon and 2,566 mm in Kaprada) and leading the State Emergency Operations Centre to issue red alerts for ten districts and release water from major dams. The Gujarat Health Department placed the state on high alert, operating 24‑hour control rooms in all districts, running 6,868 medical camps that treated over 1.74 million people, deploying 1,496 ambulances, distributing chlorine tablets and ORS, repairing 3,000 water‑pipeline leaks and reporting no major public‑health emergency.

In early August 2026 a Chandipura virus outbreak linked to the monsoon season was confirmed: 35 cases out of 184 suspected, with 22 child deaths. Seven patients remain in intensive care, six have recovered. Authorities expanded testing, mobilised rapid‑response teams, intensified sand‑fly vector control, and directed all paediatric facilities to admit suspected cases to ICU, urging parents to seek immediate care for fever, seizures or altered consciousness.
