Navy sailor family deaths in Mumbai

An Indian Navy sailor, his wife, and their two young children were found dead at their official residence in the high-security Navy Nagar area of Colaba, South Mumbai.

Initial reports from the Cuffe Parade police suggested a possible murder-suicide. Preliminary findings indicated the sailor died by hanging, while the deaths of his wife and children—aged two months and three years—were suspected to have been caused by poisoning. The Indian Navy confirmed the incident and stated it is cooperating with the investigation.

Subsequent details identified the deceased as 30-year-old sailor Purnamal Shambhulal Mehra, his 28-year-old wife Oma, their three-year-old son Yash, and their two-month-old daughter. A post-mortem at J.J. Hospital confirmed Purnamal died of asphyxiation due to hanging. While investigators continue to look into potential poisoning for the wife and children, official causes of death remain pending forensic and chemical reports.

Investigators are looking into potential marital disputes as a factor, noting that the couple had frequent arguments and that the wife’s father had recently attempted to move the family to Rajasthan. No suicide note was recovered from the scene, and no suspicious substances were found during initial forensic searches.
