NBL championship and international expansion

The National Basketball League (NBL) has seen developments in both championship outcomes and commercial expansion. The Sydney Kings secured their sixth NBL championship by defeating the Adelaide 36ers 3-2 in a five-game series, with Kendric Davis earning MVP honors.

Following the season, the league announced a significant expansion of its international broadcast footprint for the NBL27 season. Coverage will extend to 35 countries across North America, Europe, and Asia through partnerships with entities such as NBA TV and EuroLeague TV. In North America, the NBA TV partnership is expected to reach between 33 and 37 million households.

As the NBL27 season approaches its September 19 start date, commercial activity has increased with a new official partnership with Heinz Australia and updates to the league’s official app. On the court, the opening round will feature six live games on ESPN, including matchups such as Melbourne United against the Adelaide 36ers and the Perth Wildcats against the South East Melbourne Phoenix.

Competitive tensions persist, highlighted by Adelaide Head Coach Trevor Gleeson’s comments regarding recruitment processes. Additionally, the Perth Wildcats will enter their season opener without primary point guards Brandon Knight and Jaron Rillie, necessitating a ‘committee’ approach to ballhandling.
