Nemzeti Sportrádió cessation in Hungary
Overview
Nemzeti Sportrádió is scheduled to cease broadcasting on November 1, 2024. The decision follows a request by its provider, Magyar Rádió és Televízió (MRTV) Nonprofit Zrt., to remove the station from the list of public service media services due to economic unfeasibility.
The station launched on June 14, 2024, to coincide with the opening of the European Football Championship. It provided coverage for competitive, para, and leisure sports, as well as youth matches. The station’s short operational period followed the dismissals of editor-in-chief Attila Ballai in August and Nemzeti Sport editor-in-chief György Szöllősi in July.
The National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) confirmed the station was deemed economically unsustainable. The 105.9 MHz frequency in Budapest will be released, and the former studio space has been taken over by Petőfi Rádió.
