Nepal-China border flash flood disaster

Overview

A catastrophic natural disaster involving an ice and rock avalanche triggered massive flash floods along the Bhotekoshi river in the border region between Nepal and China. The disaster has resulted in significant loss of life, with the death toll rising from 392 to 469 people. Approximately 1,500 people remain missing, including hundreds of foreign tourists and approximately 290 Indian nationals.

Amidst the ongoing search and rescue operations in the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi river areas, authorities arrested two men, Madan Gurung and Umesh Chaudhary, for allegedly stealing gold earrings from the body of a deceased woman. The arrests were made in Bharatpur, Chitwan district, following the viral spread of a video showing the suspects using wooden planks and the victim’s hair to pull the body from the water before removing the jewelry. Nepal Police characterized the theft as “inhumane” conduct. The incident has caused public outrage and raised concerns that the removal of personal items from victims may hinder forensic identification processes.

Rescue operations continue as the region grapples with immense destruction. The flooding has destroyed critical infrastructure, including bridges and power projects, and has isolated numerous villages. Chinese authorities reported that over 1,000 people, including 555 tourists, have been evacuated from the disaster zone, though they warned of a high risk of further flooding.
