Nepal-China Korala border trade disruptions

Overview

Heavy rainfall, floods, landslides, and river erosion have caused extensive damage to the Beni–Jomsom–Korala road, a critical trade route between Nepal and China. Damage has been reported at 46 different locations, including a 100-metre section of road that sank near Begkhola and a major landslide at Baiseri.

The disruptions have halted trade, leaving over 150 containers of Chinese imports stuck at the Nhechung Customs yard and approximately 200 electric vehicles unable to reach their destinations. While some sections like the Ghansa-Korala stretch have resumed two-way traffic, other areas remain impassable.

In response to the situation, Chinese Ambassador Zhang Maoming inspected the Mustang district and pledged that China would provide support to streamline trade. Discussions have focused on addressing the movement of stranded goods and the potential for the Korala Customs Office to operate around the clock to mitigate the impact.
