Nepal education sector reform initiative
Overview
Nepal’s Minister for Education and Sports, Sasmit Pokharel, initiated a nationwide ‘Education Dialogue’ programme to reform the country’s education sector. The ministry deployed teams to all seven provinces to gather feedback from local authorities, teachers, parents, and students, while conducting on-site visits to community schools to assess infrastructure and learning conditions.
Following these provincial consultations, the government moved to review the collected input at the Nepal Academy in Kathmandu to finalize the draft of the School Education Bill. The dialogue process aims to address issues such as teacher professional development, curriculum updates, and the division of educational responsibilities between federal, provincial, and local governments. Minister Pokhrel noted that the extended consultation period was intended to ensure more inclusive discussions with stakeholders than previous drafts allowed.
