Overview

Water management authorities in the Netherlands have begun lifting drought-related restrictions following improved precipitation and stabilized water levels.

In the Amstel, Gooi en Vecht region, the water board lifted bans on using surface and groundwater in late August. While the restrictions were eased due to rainfall, officials noted the situation remained “worrying,” stating that rainfall would need to reach roughly four times the September average to fully resolve the deficit. Measures to combat salinization, such as keeping certain locks and canals closed, remained in effect.

Similarly, in the Flevoland and IJsselmeer regions, Waterschap Zuiderzeeland lifted a ban on using surface water to inundate agricultural plots. The regional drought status was downgraded from a ‘threatening’ shortage to a ‘possible’ shortage, driven by stable IJsselmeer levels and falling temperatures, though a national precipitation deficit of approximately 300 millimeters persisted.
