Neuquén electricity subsidy program expansion

Overview

The Neuquén provincial government launched the ‘Tarifa Neuquina’ program, which offers a 30% discount on fixed and variable electricity charges for residential users of the Ente Provincial de Energía del Neuquén (EPEN). Governor Rolando Figueroa noted that the reduction is funded by renegotiated hydroelectric royalty recognitions. The program initially targeted approximately 96,000 households, representing 87% of EPEN’s residential users, with plans to extend benefits to the hotel and gastronomic sectors.

Following the initial launch, the provincial government expanded the subsidy to cover the entire province. This expansion was intended to eliminate territorial imbalances and ensure the financial stability of utility distributors. Carlos Quintriqueo, Vice President of the CALF cooperative, supported the measure, stating that provincial treasury contributions are necessary to prevent the financial exhaustion of service providers and to help maintain electrical infrastructure.
