New York homicide and arson manhunt

Overview

A multi-agency manhunt was initiated in upstate New York following the discovery of 70-year-old Robert Ryan's body inside a residence on Greenville Turnpike in Orange County. Investigators determined that a fire had been intentionally set at the home to cover up a homicide.

Authorities identified 32-year-old Thomas David Ryan as the suspect, describing him as ‘armed and dangerous.’ Family members noted the suspect suffered from severe mental illness.

Following a search involving local law enforcement and the FBI, Thomas Ryan was apprehended in the Gilboa area of Schoharie County. The arrest was facilitated by a tip regarding the victim’s gray 2016 Toyota Prius, which had been found abandoned in a church parking lot.

Upon his capture, Ryan was treated for injuries sustained prior to his apprehension and was reported to be in stable condition at a hospital. Authorities have not yet disclosed a specific motive or the formal charges facing the suspect.
