New York law enforcement and public safety investigations
Overview
Authorities in New York are conducting multiple investigations into fatal incidents and allegations of police misconduct. In Ulster County, State Police and fire investigators are examining a fatal structure fire at the White Birch Apartments in Woodstock that left one person dead. In Troy, an individual was arrested following a hit-and-run crash involving a city ambulance that injured two firefighters.
In Staten Island, investigations are underway by the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau and the Civilian Complaint Review Board following an encounter between officers and a 17-year-old boy. The teenager’s family alleges he sustained facial injuries during the incident, while the NYPD stated the officers were responding to reports of shots fired.
Additionally, New York State Attorney General Letitia James released security footage concerning a June investigation into a fatal collision in North Patchogue. The crash involved an off-duty Suffolk police officer and resulted in the death of a passenger. The Attorney General’s office has not yet determined if criminal charges will be filed.
