Newborn abandonment incidents in Brazil

Overview

In late August 2026, two separate incidents involving abandoned newborns were reported in Brazil.

On August 24, a newborn was discovered in a trash bag in the Guarituba neighborhood of Piraquara. The infant, who was found with the umbilical cord and placenta still attached, was treated for hypothermia and suspected fractures at a hospital in Curitiba. The discovery was made by Kátia Andreia Beje, who reported hearing sounds she initially mistook for one of her 17 cats in distress. After following the noise to a dark, vegetated area, Beje found a plastic bag wrapped in a black cloth. Neighbors assisted in uncovering the infant, who was then wrapped in blankets and transported by Samu emergency services.

The mother, a 16-year-old, claimed she believed the child was born dead and alleged the pregnancy resulted from sexual abuse. Police are investigating the case as potential attempted infanticide and abandonment.

On August 31, a newborn was found dead inside a plastic bag within a garbage truck in the Brasilândia neighborhood of São Paulo. A sanitation worker discovered the body, which was also still attached to the umbilical cord and placenta. Authorities impounded the vehicle and conducted forensic examinations to determine the circumstances of the death.
