NFL disciplinary incidents involving Dre Greenlaw

Overview

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw has faced multiple disciplinary incidents involving league fines and ejections.

On October 5, the NFL fined Greenlaw $11,941 for taunting the Denver Broncos bench following a confrontation with head coach Sean Payton. Greenlaw attributed the outburst to frustration regarding his previous release from the Broncos.

On October 11, during a Week 5 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, Greenlaw was ejected in the second quarter. The ejection followed a personal foul for a late hit on quarterback Sam Darnold, which escalated into a physical altercation on the sideline where Greenlaw headbutted Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet. The disqualification was issued under a rule allowing officials to disqualify players for “non-football acts.”

Following a review, the NFL issued a one-game suspension for actions deemed “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.” This disciplinary action, combined with his ejection, results in Greenlaw missing a game and a half.

In Greenlaw’s absence, rookie Jaden Dugger is expected to take on a larger role. While Dugger has primarily served as the team's starting SAM linebacker, he is expected to move to the WILL position to play the majority of defensive snaps in Week 6. Despite the disciplinary issues, the 49ers maintained an undefeated 5-0 record following their 32-29 victory over the Seahawks.
