Ngọc Việt Education Director sentenced in music show fraud

Overview

Nguyễn Thị Thu Hà, Director of Ngọc Việt Education, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for “customer deception” following the cancellation of the music program ‘Về đây bốn cánh chim trời’ in Hanoi.

The event, which was intended to feature works by composers such as Văn Cao and Trịnh Công Sơn, was canceled after the company collected over 3.6 billion VND in ticket sales. Investigations revealed the cancellation stemmed from the company’s failure to secure necessary music copyrights for 24 works and unpaid contracts. Despite knowing the show could not proceed, Hà directed staff to continue selling tickets and admitting spectators, affecting more than 700 ticket holders.

During the trial, conflicting testimonies emerged regarding the cause of the failure. Hà argued that the cancellation was due to Music Director Vũ Quang Trung’s refusal to perform despite her attempts to settle payments. However, Trung stated the show was halted because the company changed payment methods at the last minute and failed to settle copyright notices. The court ruled that while there was no evidence of intent to defraud from the outset, the decision to continue ticket sales once the show’s failure became certain constituted deception.

In addition to the prison sentence, Hà is prohibited from holding management positions in event production for three years following her term. The court also ordered both Hà and Ngọc Việt Education to refund all ticket money to the affected customers.
