NIA investigation into terror networks in Jammu and Kashmir

Overview

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is conducting a series of operations across Jammu and Kashmir to investigate a cross-border terror conspiracy. The probe focuses on links between Pakistan-based handlers and local ‘overground workers’ (OGWs) who allegedly provide logistical support, intelligence, and movement for infiltrating terrorists.

The investigation was prompted by the March 31, 2026, arrest of an individual linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) organization, during which a hand grenade and live ammunition were recovered. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Pakistani nationals linked to the conspiracy.

In late August, the NIA conducted searches at 10 locations, including Srinagar, Kupwara, Anantnag, Pulwama, and Budgam, investigating potential links between drug trafficking and terrorism financing. On September 12, the agency conducted further searches in the Kupwara, Kulgam, Bandipora, Baramulla, and Sopore areas. These operations aim to dismantle a support network used for communication, reconnaissance, and providing logistical assistance, such as shelter and movement, to infiltrated terrorists. Investigators continue to examine financial trails, communication channels, and the supply chains for arms and explosives to fully map the network’s activities.
