Nicaraguan athletic competition and international engagement

Overview

Nicaraguan athletes have achieved recent success and preparation for international competition. At the XXII CODICADER 2026 Central American Student Games in Honduras, Ashly Jael Herrera Espinoza won Nicaragua’s first gold medal in the +70 kg judo category. Other podium finishes in judo included a silver medal by Sharon Elizabeth García Narváez in the -48 kg category and a bronze medal by Seydi Selena Rivera López in the -57 kg category.

Following these achievements, the Nicaraguan Institute of Sports (IND) held a flag-raising ceremony on September 7 to honor national delegations preparing for upcoming international events. These delegations include teams for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Artistic Gymnastics, and Chess, which are scheduled to compete in Colombia, El Salvador, and Uzbekistan. Maurice Ortega Murillo, the Presidential Delegate for Sports Promotion and Development, noted the government’s commitment to supporting these disciplines.
