Nigeria Basketball Federation leadership transition

Overview

Ahmadu Musa Kida, President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), announced he will not seek a third term during an Extraordinary Congress in Yola. Kida stated, “I have never been part of subverting the NBBF approved constitution,” and committed to a transparent transition for the 2026–2030 cycle.

The NBBF established an electoral timetable for elections in Abuja, with the main Elective Congress scheduled for October 15, 2026. A seven-member Electoral Committee, led by Dr. Lanre Glover, was appointed to oversee the process, which will be monitored by representatives from FIBA, the National Olympic Committee, and the National Sports Commission. The schedule includes nomination collection, candidate screening, and elections for player and technical representatives.

As of October 2026, the Electoral Committee has cleared four presidential aspirants: Olumide Oyedeji, Igoche Mark, Mustapha Abdullahi, and Ejike Ugboaja. One candidate, Ayo Bakare, was disqualified for submitting nomination forms twelve minutes past the deadline. Additionally, Igoche Mark has been instructed to submit tax clearance documentation to avoid disqualification. Ugo Udezue is currently the sole candidate for vice president.

Former international player Olumide Oyedeji, who formally declared his candidacy, has pledged to prioritize grassroots development, domestic competitions, and player welfare. Amidst the electoral process, youth and student sports leaders from organizations such as the Amalgamation of Regional Youth Organizations of Nigeria have called for a renewal of leadership, emphasizing the need for “vision, integrity, and innovation” to address stagnation in athlete welfare and facility management.
