Nigeria election-related political violence

In late July 2026, reports highlighted a surge of politically motivated violence ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections. On July 27, a senior aide to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was attacked by suspected thugs during an All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders’ meeting in Effurun, while armed hoodlums raided an INEC voter‑card distribution centre in Osun State, stealing three packs of Permanent Voter Cards. Police and party officials condemned both incidents and called for investigations.

Two days later, a clash erupted at the APC’s Delta Central stakeholders meeting at the Petroleum Training Institute in Effurun. Video footage showed assaults on several individuals, including the same aide, Temple Mudi, and a journalist. The Delta State government ordered security agencies to arrest the perpetrators, while the APC denied any involvement and labelled accusations as politically motivated. Both incidents underscored a pattern of intimidation and theft targeting electoral processes, prompting calls for law‑and‑order measures as the governorship election approached on August 15.
