Nigeria fashion and creative industry developments 2026
Overview
Nigeria is preparing for the 2026 Nigeria Fashion Week (NFW) in Abuja, scheduled for October 1 to 4. Themed ‘Beyond the Runway: Fashion and Culture at the Heart of the Green & Blue Economy (Going Green 5)’, the event aims to integrate fashion with sustainability, innovation, and economic growth. Moving from its traditional base in Lagos, the event will be held at the Soul Lounge Resort and feature over 40 local and international designers, alongside a Fashion Entrepreneurial Forum designed to transition creative skills into viable businesses. The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS have confirmed support for the ‘Going Green 5’ program, which promotes circular production, recycling, upcycling, and responsible sourcing to reduce waste and create employment. Additionally, China and Nigeria are exploring deeper ties in the creative industries, highlighted by a China-Nigeria Fashion Show in Abuja that showcased traditional attire from both nations to foster cultural exchange and innovation. During the 2026 Nigeria Fashion Week, Hannatu Musawa, Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, identified the fashion industry as a primary driver for job creation and national economic growth. Musawa noted that fashion is a leading subsector within the creative economy with significant potential to expand the country’s economic base. To support President Bola Tinubu’s goal of building a 1 trillion-dollar economy, the federal government is developing a framework to address gaps in data, funding, infrastructure, and market support. This includes plans for a “one-stop shop” facility for creative practitioners to maximize their economic potential. Broader efforts to boost the creative economy include the Creative Africa Nexus Weekend (CANEX WKND 2026), hosted by Afreximbank in partnership with the Nigerian government and the African Union, scheduled for November 5–8 in Lagos.
