Nigeria NYSC controversies and attacks
Entities: National Youth Service Corps · Independent National Electoral Commission · Stanley Okebaram · Ekiti State · Bayelsa State
Overview
In late July 2026, civil‑society groups in Nigeria pressed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to suspend the appointment of a new procurement director while an age‑falsification probe was pending. The NYSC also refuted online claims that its corps members were being paid to influence the Osun State governorship election, emphasizing its non‑partisan stance.
A week later, two separate violent episodes involving NYSC members were reported. In Ekiti State, a corps member serving as an ad hoc electoral officer was shot by individuals described as political thugs, leading the Independent National Electoral Commission to pause the by‑election. In Bayelsa State, the body of a 27‑year‑old NYSC member was found in Nembe Creek after he disappeared while on duty, prompting a police investigation into his death.
