Nigeria school resumption and safety disputes

Overview

Nigerian educational institutions scheduled to resume the 2026/2027 academic session on September 14, 2026. The Federal Government initially assured stakeholders that security agencies were maintaining “heightened vigilance” around school environments to ensure a safe commencement for Federal Unity Colleges.

Following the scheduled resumption, the Federal Ministry of Education issued a call for parents to return their children to the 117 Federal Unity Colleges. This directive was issued to counter conflicting communications on social media. The Ministry officially disowned a group calling itself the ‘National Parent-Teacher Association’ (PTA) of the federal unity colleges, stating the group has no mandate to issue directives.

However, local representatives, including the PTA Chairman of the Federal Government Girls College, Bwari, expressed concerns regarding the authenticity of resumption notices. They indicated that the association could not approve resumption until safety concerns were resolved and authentic directives were issued, advising parents to keep students engaged at home in the interim.
