Nigeria tertiary education investment programme

In late July 2026 Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, announced that the federal government had committed more than ₦1 trillion to the country’s tertiary education sector over the prior two years. The funding includes large allocations for new student hostels, rehabilitation of existing facilities, upgrades to medical schools, engineering workshops, and the creation of modern medical simulation labs. The minister also introduced two digital platforms—the National Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) and the Digitalised Nigeria Education Management Information System (DNEMIS)—to provide real‑time data for evidence‑based planning, and urged states to complete the annual school census.

A few days later, Alausa received commendation from former Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, who highlighted the reforms as evidence of Nigeria’s growing commitment to education. Both officials looked forward to the Global Education Summit in September, co‑chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, expecting increased international funding and partnership opportunities for Nigeria’s education sector.
