Nigeria women's empowerment initiatives

In late July 2026, Kwara State became the first in Nigeria’s North Central zone to adopt and domesticate the national Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy. The ceremony highlighted the state’s high readiness scores and called for expanded credit access and vocational training for women. At the same time, the federal Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development visited Adamawa State, promoting women’s savings groups and noting that the Nigeria for Women Programme Scale‑Up had already reached over 1.3 million women nationwide.

A few days later, the minister framed the effort as an “era of limitless possibilities” for Nigerian women, linking economic empowerment, social protection and family support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. She emphasized collaboration with groups such as the Police Officers’ Wives Association and highlighted the POWA CARES initiatives. At a national convention, gender advocates called for greater political participation, arguing that sustainable development depends on women’s involvement in governance and policy‑making.
