Nigerian cultural and culinary festivals in Abuja

Overview

Abuja has hosted various initiatives aimed at promoting Nigerian heritage and economic empowerment through culture. In late September, the inaugural International Akara Day Festival was launched to showcase indigenous delicacies like akara and support women and youth entrepreneurship. Co-conveners Abiodun Macaulay and Patrick Onazi stated the initiative aims to project Nigerian delicacies onto a global stage to counter the popularity of foreign cuisines. Organizers intend for the festival to become an annual event held every September 21.

Following this, the 14th Nollywood Cultural Heritage Festival (NCHF) took place from October 22 to October 24 at the FCT Exhibition Pavilion. Organized by founder Agility Onwurah in collaboration with the House Committee on Commerce, the festival focused on preserving African heritage through film, tourism, and creative enterprise. The event featured an African Fashion Runway, food festivals, cultural dances, and film screenings.

The festival concluded with an award ceremony recognizing individuals for their contributions to Nigerian culture. Honorees included broadcaster Dr. Adaora Onyechere Sydney-Jack, who received the title ‘Ada N’ekwuru Oha’, and Okiemute Mrakpo, designated Ambassador of African Culture. Other recipients included Professor Munachimso Stella, Nnena Njoku, Dr. Onyekachi Nwaogu, and Dr. Queen Dillion. The 2026 edition also included discussions on how legislation can support cultural preservation and economic opportunities.
