The Nigerian military has recently addressed the circulation of viral videos that threaten the reputation of its institutions and leadership.
Initially, the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) launched legal action following the release of a video by Ruth Ogunleye. The video contained allegations against the NDA Commandant, Maj. Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye, concerning a dispute with a staff member. The academy described the claims as unverified attempts to damage the institution’s reputation.
Subsequently, the Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) issued a debunking of a viral video purportedly showing Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, making partisan political statements. Major-General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, identified the footage as an “artificial intelligence-generated fabrication” intended to mislead the public and bring the Armed Forces into disrepute. The DHQ reaffirmed the military’s commitment to remaining a professional and apolitical institution.
