Nissan Tekton SUV production and market launch
Overview
Nissan has initiated the international export of its new Tekton midsize SUV from its manufacturing hub in Chennai, India. The first shipment of over 1,300 vehicles was sent to South Africa, Bhutan, and Nepal. This move is part of a broader strategy to use Indian production facilities for global markets.
In the Indian domestic market, Nissan is positioning the Tekton within the premium mid-size segment using a ‘value-premium’ approach. Built on the CMF-B platform shared with the Renault Duster, the vehicle features a ‘Premium Robust’ design philosophy inspired by the Nissan Patrol. It is intended to compete with established models such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The Indian lineup includes a 1.0L Turbo-Petrol and a 1.3L Turbo-Petrol producing 163PS and 280Nm. The vehicle offers 212mm of ground clearance, a 518-liter boot capacity, and a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating with six standard airbags. Pricing in India ranges from ₹10.49 lakh to ₹18.59 lakh (ex-showroom).
Following its African debut in South Africa, the Tekton has officially launched in Eswatini. Unveiled at a showroom in Manzini, the vehicle is marketed as a lifestyle-oriented family SUV. Additionally, Nissan is developing a seven-seater derivative of the Tekton. Spy shots of this upcoming three-row variant indicate a longer rear section and a redesigned boomerang-style LED tail-lamp signature, though it is expected to maintain the front-wheel-drive layout and shared platform architecture.
