Nitin Gadkari clarifies remarks on leadership transition

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has issued several calls regarding India’s national direction and leadership transition.

During Independence Day celebrations, Gadkari urged citizens to transform independence into ‘Swarajya’ (self-governance) to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of India as a ‘Vishwa Guru’ (global leader). He emphasized nation-building through the prosperity of farmers, laborers, and rural villages.

Following these remarks, Gadkari suggested that the younger generation should assume greater leadership responsibilities in public life. He noted that while the older generation can provide guidance, it is time to hand over significant work to new leaders. These comments align with recent organizational changes within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which introduced a new 65-member national team featuring 51 new faces.

In response to widespread speculation regarding a potential political retirement or a role in a Union Cabinet reshuffle, Gadkari clarified his remarks during an event in Nagpur. His office stated that his call for younger leadership was specifically directed toward the Laxmanrao Mankar Trust, an organization he established for tribal development and Ekal Vidyalayas. He explained that due to his age and the physical demands of the trust's work, it is time to transition leadership within that specific organization to younger individuals.

During the same address, Gadkari reflected on his thirty years in public life and discussed his health following the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the importance of yoga and discipline. He reiterated his commitment to development in Maharashtra, specifically focusing on providing electricity to all tribal villages in the state.
