Noida International Airport drainage and misinformation

Overview

On August 11, 2026, Noida International Airport in Jewar experienced temporary waterlogging following intense rainfall. Social media footage showed water accumulating in the parking area and on the passage connecting the terminal to the airport entrance.

Airport authorities stated the water was cleared within approximately 30 minutes and emphasized that the incident did not disrupt flight operations or passenger movement. Management is reportedly reviewing the drainage system to prevent future occurrences.

The incident has drawn significant political criticism. In addition to previous critiques from the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has questioned the quality of the infrastructure and alleged corruption. These criticisms follow the airport’s inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2026 and the commencement of commercial operations in June 2026. The project is developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, with construction managed by Tata Projects.

By August 17, the situation evolved into a legal investigation. Uttar Pradesh Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) after airport management lodged a complaint against a Facebook account named ‘Sach Bolo’. Management alleged that the circulating videos were ‘fake, misleading, and a distortion of actual conditions’ designed to damage the project’s reputation. Authorities are now investigating the source and intent behind the dissemination of the content.
