Reports indicate that Erhart allegedly used a kitchen knife to stab her children during a period of domestic tension. Prior to the attack, Erhart reportedly brandished a firearm at the children’s father and grandmother, allegedly telling the father, ‘say goodbye to your children.’ During a confrontation, the father reportedly managed to disarm her and disperse the weapon's parts before being forced from the home by Erhart, who was then armed with a knife.

Upon the arrival of Mandan police, Erhart was found covered in blood and holding a kitchen knife to her own throat, reportedly asking officers to kill her. Mandan Police Chief Jason Ziegler described the scene as one of the most traumatic encountered by his officers.

Following the incident, District Judge Marina Spahr set Erhart’s bond at $3 million cash, citing the ‘extreme violence in these alleged charges and the threat to the community.’ A no-contact order has been issued to protect the surviving victims and family members. Erhart faces counts of murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and domestic violence.
