North Macedonia financial institution asset growth
Overview
In the second quarter of 2026, other financial institutions (OFIs) in North Macedonia reported total assets of 336.36 billion denars, marking a 7.2 percent quarterly increase and a 22.1 percent annual growth.
OFIs represent 23.3 percent of the country’s total financial system assets. Pension funds constitute the largest portion of this segment at 63.7 percent, following an 8 percent quarterly and 21 percent annual increase fueled by investments in debt and equity securities. Investment funds also experienced significant expansion, with annual growth of 44.2 percent. While insurance company assets grew by 8.8 percent annually, financial companies saw a quarterly decline of 1.1 percent despite maintaining a 30.3 percent annual increase.
According to the National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia, the growth in the non-banking financial institution (NBFI) sector was primarily driven by increased investments in equity and debt securities. Investment funds specifically saw a quarterly rise of 12.3 percent.
Beyond the financial sector, the National Bank's Council noted that the domestic economy remains resilient despite external uncertainties. Economic activity showed signs of acceleration during the second quarter, supported by growth in construction, industrial production, and the hospitality sector. Additionally, inflation is on a slowing trajectory and remains within the Bank's forecasts, while foreign exchange reserves stood at 4,936.4 million euros at the end of June 2026.
