North Macedonia Safe City surveillance rollout
Overview
North Macedonia is implementing the ‘Safe City’ video surveillance system to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents.
In September 2026, Minister of Internal Affairs Panče Toškovski reviewed the system’s impact in Tetovo, noting that traffic fatalities in the area decreased from nine in the first eight months of the previous year to three in the same period this year. The Minister indicated that the system is intended to change driving habits and that a nationwide expansion is planned.
Following the rollout in Kumanovo, local police reported a 25 percent reduction in traffic accidents, with 154 recorded in the first six months of the year compared to 206 during the same period the previous year. While the system currently covers specific boulevards and localities, authorities plan to expand camera installation to additional locations in Kumanovo to meet police and citizen needs.
