Northeast Brazil economic development

Overview

The Northeast region of Brazil is experiencing significant economic growth across various sectors. In the viticulture industry, the region has emerged as the second-largest wine producer in the country, accounting for 7.32% of national volume in 2025. This growth is characterized by high production efficiency among its 32 wineries, particularly in Pernambuco’s Agreste region, where producers utilize research to cultivate varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.

Broadening the economic scope, regional exports from 415 municipalities reached US$ 20.6 billion between January and September 2026. The export portfolio is diverse, spanning soybeans, corn, petroleum, minerals, and automobiles. Bahia and Pernambuco serve as key contributors, with significant activity in minerals, petroleum, and vehicle manufacturing. To sustain this momentum, the Superintendency for the Development of the Northeast (Sudene) is investigating blended finance models and regional funds to modernize logistics and infrastructure in transport, energy, and mining.
