Nova Iguaçu public health service expansion

Overview

The city of Nova Iguaçu has implemented several measures to enhance its public health services. The municipal government expanded nighttime healthcare availability to seven units, including the Myriam da Rocha Azeredo Family Clinic, to accommodate residents with non-standard working or studying hours. This expansion follows a significant increase in demand for extended hours, with appointments more than doubling between January and August.

To strengthen emergency response, the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) reinforced its fleet through a partnership between the municipality, the Brazilian Federal Government, and the Ministry of Health. The acquisition of three new ambulances, intended to replace older advanced support units, brings the total SAMU fleet to thirteen vehicles operating across eight different bases. This updated fleet includes three units for advanced support and ten for basic support. In August, SAMU performed 3,115 calls.

These service reinforcements coincide with a surge in trauma cases. The Hospital Geral de Nova Iguaçu (HGNI) reported treating 5,520 traffic accident victims during the first eight months of 2026, a figure that nearly matches the total for the entire previous year. Motorcycle accidents constitute the vast majority of these incidents, representing 78.4% of traffic-related admissions during this period.
