Novo Nordisk Foundation quantum chip manufacturing project
Overview
The Novo Nordisk Foundation has announced plans to establish a quantum chip production facility in Copenhagen to bolster Europe’s capacity in quantum technology. CEO Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen noted that the foundation has committed over 2.9 billion DKK to build a “world-class quantum ecosystem” in Denmark and Europe, with the factory expected to open in 2027.
In collaboration with Quantum Foundry Copenhagen, the project involves constructing a 5,300-square-meter fabrication facility. The site is intended to transition quantum technology from fundamental research to industrial-scale manufacturing by providing advanced equipment, wafer fabrication services, and ultra-high vacuum capabilities to global vendors.
The foundry will coordinate with the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme at the University of Copenhagen’s Niels Bohr Institute, which seeks to develop Denmark’s first fully functional fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2034.
