OAB initiatives and challenges for young Brazilian lawyers

Overview

The Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB) has initiated efforts to support early-career legal professionals in Brazil. In Rio Grande do Norte, the OAB/RN held the 11th Conference of the Potiguar Advocacy to discuss legal innovation and launched the ‘State Campaign for the Valorization of Young Advocacy’. This campaign focuses on institutional representation, legal training, fee valorization, and entrepreneurship, including the appointment of an Ombudsman for Beginning Advocacy.

Following these initiatives, the ‘Censo Fala Jovem Advocacia’ survey was released, detailing the specific obstacles faced by over 9,000 lawyers with up to five years of registration. The census found that 36% of respondents struggle with a lack of clients, while others reported technical insecurity, high office maintenance costs, and a lack of mentorship. The data revealed that 39% of those surveyed had been registered for less than one year.
