Oaxaca BinniBus transit system expansion
Overview
Oaxaca is expanding and restructuring its metropolitan transit system through the BinniBus collective transport initiative. The system has recently introduced the RT02 ‘Yii Gap (Cerro Alto)’ route, a 34.6-kilometer line utilizing 10 electric units, including double-decker buses, to serve over 16,000 residents.
To manage urban congestion, the Oaxaca Secretariat of Mobility (Semovi) has ordered federal Urvan-type transport to relocate terminals away from the city’s Historic Center within 60 days.
Legislative support for the project has grown, with the Oaxaca State Congress approving a budget of 53,216,000 pesos to ensure system viability. This funding supports a tiered fare structure, including an 8-peso general rate and a 4-peso preferential rate for students. Over a two-year period, the BinniBus network has expanded from six to 35 routes, currently serving more than 52,000 daily users with an emphasis on safety technology and electric vehicle integration.
