Oaxaca municipal infrastructure upgrades

In late July 2026, Oaxaca state officials inaugurated a series of urban renovation projects. Governor Salomón Jara Cruz and Oaxaca de Juárez mayor Ray Chagoya opened the restored Mirador del Cerro del Fortín, featuring carved stone letters, ancestral iconography and a visitor QR code, with plans to replicate the design elsewhere. In Santa Lucía del Camino, municipal president Juan Carlos García Márquez highlighted ongoing paving of major avenues, tree planting, new pedestrian lighting, and the reopening of the historic church after restoration support from the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

By early August 2026, the focus shifted to expanding LED street lighting across the region. Santa Lucía del Camino installed more than 40 new LED lamps in the Flores Sur neighborhood under the "Santa Lucía Segura e Iluminada" program, coupled with preventive tree pruning to improve safety for students traveling after dark. Nearby Jesús María replaced 121 luminaires with LEDs, achieving full LED illumination in streets, public spaces, schools and roads. Municipal officials set a target of 3,500 LED fixtures by the end of 2026, aiming to cut electricity consumption and redirect savings to further upgrades.
