Octavian Popescu loan to Levadiakos extended to 2027

Romanian winger Octavian Popescu has joined the Greek club Levadiakos on a loan deal from FCSB. While initial reports indicated the move was for the remainder of the season, recent updates specify the loan is now set to last until the summer of 2027.

The 23-year-old, who has seven appearances for the Romanian national team, intends to use the move to relaunch his career. At Levadiakos, he joins other Romanian players such as Adrian Șut and Alexandru Pantea under coaches Elias Charalambous and Mihai Pintilii.

The transfer follows controversial reports regarding a police intervention at Popescu’s Romanian residence. Authorities were allegedly called after he became unresponsive following the consumption of nitrous oxide, leading to a psychiatric evaluation. FCSB officials have characterized the loan as an opportunity for the player to seek a ‘fresh start.’

Opinions on the move remain divided. Former striker Adrian Mutu described the loan as a ‘signal of alarm,’ while Ioan Becali criticized Popescu’s professionalism. Conversely, former international Alexandru Bourceanu suggested the move could help the player manage the intense pressure from FCSB supporters. FCSB owner Gigi Becali noted that the decision was influenced by the player’s ‘social circle in Bucharest,’ though he expressed confidence that the move could be a ‘winning bet’ for Popescu’s development.
