Odisha flooding crisis

Overview

Flooding in Odisha has escalated from localized impacts on educational institutions to widespread regional crises affecting tens of thousands of residents.

In mid-August, flood-like conditions caused by the Vaitarani and Salandi rivers inundated the Pattamundai Kulsahi Ashram School in the Kendrapara district, affecting over 300 students. During this period, the Indian Meteorological Department reported that 429 villages across 52 blocks were impacted, prompting the deployment of 79 rescue teams.

By early September, the scale of the flooding increased significantly. The Subarnarekha river breached its banks following the release of excess water from the Galudih barrage in Jharkhand, impacting approximately 45,000 people in the Balasore district. Additional flooding affected thousands in the Jajpur and Mayurbhanj districts, leading to large-scale evacuations. In response to the growing crisis, state authorities increased the number of deployed response teams to 157 to manage rescue, medical assistance, and relief camp operations.
