Odisha law enforcement crackdown on narcotics and liquor

Overview

Odisha authorities have launched intensive law enforcement operations to combat illegal narcotics and liquor ahead of the festive season.

In early October, the ‘Daman’ operation, directed by DGP Vinaytosh Mishra, resulted in the arrest of 346 individuals and the execution of 1,448 non-bailable warrants. This crackdown included 89 cases under the NDPS Act, leading to the seizure of 8.13 tonnes of ganja and various other controlled substances. Additionally, police addressed illegal liquor through 1,707 cases under the Excise Act, seizing thousands of litres of both country and foreign liquor.

Following these initial efforts, Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan ordered a statewide special enforcement drive scheduled from October 10 to October 31. The Minister emphasized a “zero-tolerance policy toward habitual offenders” to mitigate the increased risk of smuggling and criminal activity during the holidays, aiming to support the national goal of an addiction-free India.
