Odisha political conflict between BJD and BJP
Overview
Political tensions in Odisha have intensified between the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of local elections. BJD President Naveen Patnaik has launched a monthly foot march, the ‘Jan Sampark Pada Yatra’, to criticize the BJP-led state government for mismanagement.
Patnaik has raised concerns regarding law and order, delays in old-age pensions, difficulties for farmers and women, and failures in flood relief and paddy procurement. He specifically accused the administration of protecting mine owners at the expense of the public. A major point of contention is the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, which the BJD claims could deprive the state of approximately Rs 1 lakh crore in revenue.
During a public meeting in the North Bhubaneswar assembly constituency, Patnaik accused the ‘double-engine’ administration of incompetence and argued that the current government has failed to maintain the development progress achieved during his tenure as chief minister.
Further escalations include allegations of vandalism at the Satyabadi block government office in Puri district. Patnaik accused BJP workers of causing chaos at the premises following controversial remarks made by Block Chairman Sunil Kumar Panda. Patnaik questioned why the state government is “patronising” such anarchy, noting similar reported disruptions at government offices in Bhubaneswar, Kendrapara, Atgarh, and Jatni. He also warned that rising commodity prices and government indifference are causing distress to farmers, women, and senior citizens.
