Odisha student union election disruptions and nominations

Overview

The Odisha Higher Education Department initially announced the resumption of student union elections for October 15, 2026, following an eight-year hiatus. To facilitate the process, the state established a strict code of conduct to prevent the use of AI-generated deepfakes and misinformation, while security officials prepared measures to monitor campuses and prevent outsider interference.

However, the election process has since faced significant disruptions. In the Bhadrak district, Bhadrak Women’s College and Naami College cancelled their scheduled polls, citing student safety and sensitive situations, respectively. These cancellations led to protests and the indefinite closure of academic activities at Bhadrak Women’s College. Additionally, colleges in Jagatsinghpur reported difficulties conducting elections due to infrastructure issues, low enrollment, and staff shortages, prompting further demonstrations by students.

Despite these localized disruptions, the nomination phase saw widespread participation. On October 9, more than 8,500 candidates filed nominations across 13 universities—including Utkal, Rama Devi, and Ravenshaw—and over 300 colleges. The Higher Education department reported that 1,175 college-level forms were rejected, leaving 7,168 valid candidates. Major participating organizations include the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), and the All India Students’ Federation (AISF). Candidates utilized large processions to demonstrate organizational strength, focusing their agendas on campus development, social security, quality education, and the regularization of staff.
