Oi restructuring asset sales
Entities: Judge Simone Gastesi Chevrand · Method Telecomunicações · Oi S.A. · 7ª Vara Empresarial da Justiça do Rio de Janeiro
Overview
In late June 2026 a Rio de Janeiro court blocked Oi’s planned sale of its 27 % stake in V.tal, saying the R$4.5 bn price fell far short of the R$12 bn floor set by its judicial recovery plan. The injunction delayed Oi’s effort to raise funds for its recovery.
In mid‑July 2026 Oi announced the sale of its isolated productive unit Oi Serviços Telefônicos to Método Telecom for about R$60 million. The contract, signed on 13 July, set installment payments with a first tranche due within a week and the balance payable within 90 days after documentation transition. The assets, serving roughly 7,400 locations, must stay operational until December 2028 and the deal awaits clearance by Anatel and Cade.
On 24 July 2026 the 7th Business Court ordered Método Telecom to deposit the full R$60.1 million purchase price immediately, applying a 50 % penalty for delayed payment and rejecting the request to postpone payment pending regulatory approvals. Oi, which reports limited cash reserves, also sought court approval to lay off employees without severance.
A further ruling on 27 July 2026 reinforced the payment mandate, ending the installment plan and warning that Oi’s operations could cease by 10 August without the funds. The judge also denied Oi’s request to continue selling remaining assets, directing that all revenue from Oi’s public‑service contracts be earmarked exclusively for paying the suppliers that keep essential services running.
